Chennai | 27-10-2026 - Gareth Batty has stepped down as Surrey head coach to join Chennai Super Kings as an assistant coach, BBC Sport reported on 26 October. The move takes the former England spinner to the Indian Premier League after a Surrey coaching tenure that delivered three successive County Championship titles.

Batty’s departure brings an end to a 21-year association with Surrey spanning two spells as a player and his subsequent work on the coaching staff, according to BBC Sport. ESPNcricinfo also reported his move to the Chennai coaching team, highlighting Surrey’s championship victories between 2022 and 2024.

Three titles in his first three seasons

Appointed head coach in 2022, Batty won the County Championship in each of his first three seasons in charge. BBC Sport reported that the sequence made Surrey the first team in almost six decades to secure the title three years running.

His achievements as head coach also included taking Surrey to T20 Finals Day on two occasions, according to the BBC. He now leaves that role for an assistant position with Chennai Super Kings rather than another head-coaching appointment.

In comments to Surrey’s website carried by BBC Sport, Batty expressed gratitude for the club’s place in his life. He described the next stage of his career as an exciting opportunity for both himself and his family and said he was looking forward to starting.

A Surrey career across playing and coaching

Batty first joined Surrey from Yorkshire and played for the club between 1998 and 2001. He then spent seven seasons with Worcestershire before returning to The Oval in 2010, BBC Sport reported.

During his second spell, he captained Surrey from 2015 to 2017. Across his playing career at the club, he made more than 350 appearances and took more than 500 wickets in all formats, according to the BBC’s account.

The former spinner also played nine Tests for England. His transition into coaching followed directly from his retirement as a player in 2021, when he joined Surrey’s staff before taking over as head coach the following year.

Stewart recognises contribution

Surrey director of cricket Alec Stewart paid tribute to Batty’s service as both a player and head coach, in comments reported by BBC Sport. Stewart said their long working relationship had demonstrated Batty’s strong commitment to the club.

While expressing regret at his departure, Stewart said he understood why Batty wanted to accept the opportunity. He also said the move would allow Batty to spend more time with his family outside the IPL season.

Surrey’s vacancy comes alongside coaching changes elsewhere in county cricket. According to BBC Sport, three of the 10 clubs due to compete in Division One of the County Championship next season are now without a head coach.

The other vacancies are at Glamorgan, following Richard Dawson’s move into the England set-up, and newly promoted Durham, where Ryan Campbell has become director of cricket. Batty’s departure therefore leaves Surrey among the top-flight counties facing a change in coaching leadership before next season.
