**HANOI | 22 October 2026** — Denmark’s APM Terminals, part of the A.P. Moller–Maersk group, and Vietnam’s Hateco Group have signed a non-binding agreement to explore the development and operation of railway freight terminals in northern Vietnam, according to Reuters reporting published on 20 October.

The agreement was signed during a visit to Denmark by Vietnam’s General Secretary and President, To Lam. The proposed cooperation would examine opportunities to connect rail freight operations with existing logistics and port infrastructure, potentially improving the movement of goods through key trade corridors.

Maersk and Hateco previously collaborated on the Hateco Hai Phong International Container Terminal, a deep-water port project in northern Vietnam that opened in 2025. The new discussions indicate continued interest in developing logistics networks capable of handling growing regional and international trade.

**Why it matters**

Integrated rail and port infrastructure can help businesses move goods more efficiently, diversify transport options and strengthen connections between manufacturing centres and export markets. Such investments are particularly relevant as companies reassess supply chains and seek greater resilience against congestion and transport disruptions.

However, the agreement is non-binding. The proposed railway terminal plans remain subject to further study, commercial decisions and any necessary approvals. No final project commitment should be inferred from the announcement alone.

**MAUK News perspective**

The proposed partnership reflects the growing importance of multimodal logistics in international commerce. Its eventual impact will depend on project execution, infrastructure capacity and the ability to connect freight terminals effectively with ports and industrial centres.
