Hyderabad | September 2, 2026: The political controversy surrounding Mirza Rahmat Baig, Member of the Telangana Legislative Council from the Hyderabad local authorities’ constituency, continues to draw attention in Hyderabad following his expulsion from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM).

The AIMIM announced Baig’s expulsion with immediate effect on August 29 and directed him to submit his resignation from the Legislative Council. The party, however, did not publicly disclose detailed reasons for the disciplinary action in its official announcement.

Baig refuses to quit MLC post

The issue intensified after Baig reportedly declined to resign from the Legislative Council despite the direction from the AIMIM leadership.

According to reports, Baig maintained that his expulsion from the party did not automatically require him to surrender his elected position as an MLC. The development has raised questions over the political and constitutional implications of the dispute, particularly as Baig’s current Council term still has several years remaining.

AIMIM has meanwhile moved to replace Baig as its organisational in-charge in the Rajendranagar Assembly constituency, appointing Bahadurpura MLA Mohammed Mubeen to oversee party activities there.

Baig alleges deepfake and blackmail attempt

Before his expulsion, Baig reportedly approached Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police, alleging that unidentified individuals had threatened to circulate fabricated or manipulated material involving him unless money was paid.

Reports said a cybercrime case was registered concerning alleged extortion and criminal intimidation. Baig has subsequently claimed that the controversial video being circulated is an AI-generated deepfake intended to damage his reputation.

Authorities have not publicly established the authenticity of the disputed video. Telangana Today also reported that a short purported video circulating online did not independently establish the identity of the person shown or the circumstances depicted.

Allegations remain subject to investigation

The controversy has generated competing claims and political reactions. Some reports have referred to serious allegations involving a woman and a minor, while Baig has denied wrongdoing and alleged that fabricated material was being used against him.

The Telangana BJP has called for an independent, court-monitored investigation or a CBI probe, arguing that expulsion from a political party should not substitute for a legal investigation. Congress leaders in Hyderabad have also sought greater transparency regarding the circumstances surrounding the AIMIM action.
